How much do I need?
Figuring out how much you need is a simple calculation: (Area to be Covered) / (Rate of Coverage) x (Number of Applications).
Here’s how to calculate your area:
a. Area to be Covered: To estimate your Area to be Covered, measure the width and the length, and then multiply the two numbers. For example, a 20 foot by 50 foot driveway would be 1000 square feet (92.9 square meters), or 20 times 50. If you have multiple sections, you can calculate the area for each, then add them together.
b. Rate of Coverage: CreteDefender is generally applied at a rate of 100 to 200 square feet per gallon (2.5 – 5 square meters/liter). Weather conditions and your concrete will dictate how much you need. The more porous it is, the more CreteDefender it will require.
In estimating, a good rule of thumb is to plan on applying 1 gallon per application for each 125 square feet on exterior concrete (3 square meters/liter). 2 applications are required for all exterior concrete and all concrete (inside or out) exposed to heavy amounts of salts. The 2nd application will generally use less CreteDefender than the first. You will need to keep the concrete wet with CreteDefender for 20 minutes during each application.
For polished or machine troweled concrete, one application at a rate of 175 square feet per gallon (4.3 square meters/liter) is a good estimate. When you apply, you will need to apply enough for the concrete to stay wet for 20 minutes.
With that background, now on to the calculation: Divide the Area of Coverage (1,000 [92.9 square meters] in this example) by the Rate of Coverage of 125 square feet per gallon (3 sq. meters/liter) (1000/125) for the project, which equals 8 (92.9/3 = 31 liters).
c. Number of Applications: For exterior uses, any concrete exposed to the elements, you need 2 applications for complete protection (See Installation Instructions). So, multiply 8 times 2, and that gives you 16 gallons (31 x 2 = 62 liters). You will likely get better coverage on the second application, so you could round down to 15 gallons and still be OK. CreteDefender comes in 5-gallon (19-liter) pails, so you need 3 pails.
On machine troweled interior concrete, only one application is needed. In this example, you would need 5 gallons (19 liters), so you would need to order 1 pail.
If you need help calculating how much CreteDefender to order, send us an e-mail or call us toll-free at (877) 830-6008 and we will be happy to assist you.
Please note: The actual amount of CreteDefender you will need may be different from the estimate. Weather conditions, humidity, and the porosity of the concrete will vary, and all will affect the amount of CreteDefender you will need. For the best coverage rates, we suggest applying CreteDefender early in the morning and away from direct sunlight.
